Twice during his time in 2nd grade, Jack fractured his humerus. The first time the doctor was sure it wouldn't have broken so no x-rays were taken. The second time they found one healed fracture, one new fracture, and the cause - a unicameral bone cyst. Since May, Jack has been being careful not to re-break the bone so that he can grow stronger bone in it's place.
Jack was accepted to Shriners Hospital where they have taken bone marrow from his hip, mixed it with some sort of growth agent and injected it into his arm to both get rid of the cyst and grow a stronger bone. We've been told to think of his unhealed arm as having the strength of paper thin balsa wood with a crack in it.
Shriners has been amazing! This is Jack right before surgery when he was drowsy and about 20 minutes after awakening from surgery. You'll notice he's blurry in the second one,because they had him hooked up to a Wii before the IV was hooked up. My cell phone doesn't take action shots. He had a great time, ordered room service for lunch, and came home with presents. It almost makes up for not getting to run and play for a year.
I am so grateful there are places like this that can make my son whole again! A hundred years ago he would probably have either lost his arm, or had a mis-shapen one. Now, in time, he will be completely normal again.
